Pandemic Ramadan, different but special for the kids!

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

My Kids have always loved Ramadan, but the 2020 Ramadan, the first one during the pandemic, was extra special for them. We all were completely at home and my mum, kids’ grandmother, was also with us. We all did lots of cooking, cleaning, decorating and a lot of in-house entertainment. Kids still talk about it, my younger one often says - “I miss the last year's Ramadan time, mom!”

It is 2021, while the pandemic situation in UAE is better, restrictions have to be followed. My kids, as usual, are excited about Ramadan. They are loving the Iftar family gathering, the long day of free time, the idea of waking up around 2 am for Suhoor, and just the overall ‘slowing down’. They loved the pace during Ramadan so much last year, that they chose to do online schooling this month. This makes them happy as they don’t have to wake up early to go to school, and can observe Ramadan fully, almost like last year. Before Iftar, every day, they also love to go with their dad to give some money as charity, and then bring some small dishes for the table. This year we are inviting friends by turn and are also getting invited by turn. The gatherings are small, but atleast the kids are being able to meet family & friends and spend time with them. This is something they really look forward to. It’s a joyful time for my kids, they love the decoration at home, enjoy challenging themselves in ‘fasting’, play sports before Iftar and enjoy watching the special programs on TV after Iftar. Even spiritually they feel very happy, they enjoy praying and reading the Quran and they keep talking about god in the most loving way.

This month has always been different than the other months, as once a year kids enjoy breaking from the normal routine. This year, and the last year, it was even more easier for the kids to slow down and cherish a relaxed spiritual time with family and the loved ones.
